Jeff,
No problem about the Nick Rothwell debate, consider
it a done deal.
I have some more info for you. If you want more
Cakewalk files they can be found at:
nic.funet.fi (128.214.6.100)
under /pub/msdos/sound/cakewalk
Also there is a mailing list you can join. Send
a mail message to:
LISTERV@LISTS.COLORADO.EDU
message: SUBS CAKEWALK
That should get you some more info. Glad to help.
Keep in touch.

Subject: EMU Proteus Banks
Hey, what's up? I have a queation for any/all emu proteus users out there.
I just got a collection of banks for my proteus...the thing is, I have
never loaded new presets into it, and thus have no idea how to do so.
Any brilliant ideas anyone? BTW, the proteus is onboard the turltle beach
multisound card, if that makes any difference in how it needs to be done.
I guess it has to happen by some kind of midi dump, but I am not sure.
I have another question for you theorists. When I edit samples, they are
represented in two dimensions. However, real waveforms travelling through
the atmosphere (a rimshot, for example) obviously exist in three dimensions
My question is, what does the z axis correspond to. ie If sound is travell-
ing as an ocean wave, that has an amplitude and a wavelength, then what
does the distance down the long axis of the wave represent. So if the
wavew is coming straight at me, what difference does how far to my left and
right it goes make? (Sorry, that was really awkward....)
Thanks,
Phil

Hi,
To my knowledge there are only 2 editor available for the K5
(at least on Atari platform !). One from Dr't and one form a
german company PA_Decoder (the one I have ).
The K5 has tons of parameters and envelopes to display .. so I don't
think that writing a PD editor is a trivial task ..
Anyway try to contact Bob.Weigel@launchpad.unc.edu (not sure if this
is still the right address .. or just send a note on r.m.m.s),
he wrote something for a K5 on a PC

there used to be a guy in Tennessee named Jim Chandler who did stuff
for the C64 and the Atari.....I remember he had a K5 editor....someone
at 'Electronic Musician' magazine should be able to put you in touch
with him.....

Try to use MAX(tm) from Opcode/IRCAM.
With a little knowledge of MIDI Sysex you can setup your

Don't know about the U20 patches that aren't tarred but in answer to your
question, renaming the .tar file in the file manager will achieve nothing.
The tar program archives anumber of single files into one larg file which
needs to be split up again by the tar program. without it, it is a bit
tricky.
If you have an MSDOS based system there is a file to read tars at
athene.uni-paderborn.de
. You can get this file by ftping the above address and going to directory
/pcsoft/msdos/starter
The file is called tarread.exe and is 14928 bytes long.
Hope this helps

Subject: macintosh effects processing/drum machine/recording programs
Are there any programs out there that turn the mac into an effects processor
(non midi, maybe an interface, plug guitar in, get a line out to amp, prefer
not to use lame midi pickup)?
Any mac drum machine programs? (pref. ones using audio out jack).
Multi-track recording programs? (again, prefer normal inputs/microphones, to
record "live" music, not midi/sequenced stuff)
Any programmers out there interested in corresponding?

Herschel A Gelman asks ..
ObEMusic: Can anyone enlighten me about the MPEG music format? Is there a
Mac player for songs in this format around?
-----------------------
I believe there is no such format in connection with music. MPEG is a
standard for full motion video data compression. Look out for movie titles
coming out on a pair of CDs suitable for CDi and CD-ROM with extra
hardware. The video quality should be significantly better than VHS and
the standard incorporates digital stereo sound.

a Mac ? I recall that it has to do with fiddling something with
ResEdit...could someone please help me out here.

Start ResEdit, but don't open a file. Then do a File/Get File Info and pick
the midifile. In the dialog that now appears, change the Type to "Midi" (note
the case), and leave the Creator alone. Close the dialog, save changes and
quit ResEdit. That's it.

I wrote a program to apply a type and creator to a Standard MIDI file. It
should be available on ftp sumex-aim.stanford.edu in the directory
info-mac/disk/util or something like that. I think it is called
SMFCaster10b3.hqx.
or something close to that. If yo have any questions, let me know.

Dear Joe:
Your baby is a fine list -- keep up the good work. I rarely read netnews as I
can reach it only by gophering to Birmingham-UK via MC
Subject: Re: Question for RI (Resident Imbecile) -- netnews
William Eldridge inquires:

EMUSIC-L is gatewayed to bit.listserv.emusic-l.
The folks at American University, out of which this list is based, have set
up a gateway for us. The "netnews@auvm.american.edu" fake user is
subscribed to the list so it receives all of the mail. It is automagically
forwarded to the netnews server. Postings from the news server are routed
back along the same path (news to fake ID through script to mail to
EMUSIC-L).
Fortunately I don't have to deal with all the details, as getting the daily
crop of bounces fixed is usually enough work. If you were interested in the
specific details, jim@auvm.american.edu (the High Poobah of networking at
AU) is the man to write to.

Jeff you wrote:
> I have ftp-ed a patch file to my local Internet gateway, but I'm having
trouble downloading to my computer. I have a feeling that it's because the
file extension is one that I am not familiar with. This is the complete
file as I have downloaded it from louie.udel.edu:
U20-presets.tar.Z
What is .tar.Z? Is this some sort of compression program?
>
The tar.Z is a suffix showing that the file has been compressed twice. To get
rid of the Z extension you can try 'get'ting the file without the Z suffix and
the ftp site may
uncompress it for you. Failing that if you are on a unix based system type
uncompress filename.tar.Z and you will be left with an uncompressed file called
file.tar. To then untar it you can try
tar -xf filename.tar
this should work, if not you'll have to look through some manual pages.
Hope this helps.

Here is some info on U-20 patches:
ucsd.edu /midi/Patches
louie.udel.edu /pub/midi/Patches
These sites hold U-20 and U-220 patches I believe.
Also there is a users group list you can subscribe
