A MIDI file is a standard file format that almost all sequencers use to save
and load. The ones that don't are usually old ones. You're sequencer might
save a .sng because it probably saves extra info, like screen colours etc.,
with the song data, but unless it is a really poor program, you should be
able to load MIDI files into it. Look for an "Import MIDI", or "Import file"
option, or something like that. This should then read in a MIDI file, and be
able to play it. There should also be a corresponding "Export.." option
which should allow you to save your songs as standard MIDI files.

look interesting. Let me know if it actually exists yet.

Hear is a useful program for those of you who have a PC and are lacking in the
polyphony department. I just got to see a sneak preview of a program called
MIDI Renderer. We used some of my MIDI files and "rendered" 16-bit stereo
performances with the 200MB library of samples that come with it. Sounded better
than my rig, i must say. And for us MAC people, i've been promised a release
by sometime next year.
Anyhow, it's a really nifty piece of software, if only to generate tracks for
HD recording or something. I am not associated with the makers, i just used to
work with the owners wife, but here's the press release they gave me:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW MULTIMEDIA SOFTWARE PRODUCT
DESIGNED TO PRODUCE WAVETABLE SOUND ON EXISTING AUDIO CARDS
Huntsville -- DIACOUSTICS will release at COMDEX/Spring'94 its latest
multimedia solution: MIDI Renderer. This is the first commercially
available product to allow users to create digital WAV files from any
MIDI music file. MIDI Renderer is a user modifiable software
synthesizer capable of producing CD quality digital music on existing
audio cards without any hardware upgrades. MIDI Renderer is an
economical alternative to buying a new wavetable sound card. Using
our software on any existing audio card (FM, non-FM or even wavetable
based) the user can produce sound that outperforms wavetable sound
cards. Not only is the resulting sound quality improved, but also this
product offers more user choices than any current sound card. With MIDI
Renderer the user can have 128 simultaneous notes, which can each be
assigned to a different instrument if desired. The result is full
orchestra capability. MIDI Renderer comes with a set of standard
defaults that require no adjustments for achieving outstanding
performance. But for those users who ask "What if?", it also offers
many user modifiable features. These advanced features allow the
creation of new instruments using different synthesis techniques such
as sampling, additive synthesis, wave sequencing, and frequency
modulation. Even the most demanding user will be pleased.
Anyone using an FM based sound card will greatly benefit from this product.
MIDI Renderer will have a list price of $129, and will be available at a
special introductory price of $69.95 until August 31st. DIACOUSTICS will
be showcasing this product at COMDEX/Spring94 booth M4341. MIDI Renderer
can be ordered by calling 1-800-365-6134. Shipping will start May 23, in
CD-ROM media for OS/2, Windows, and DOS platforms.
For complimentary tickets to COMDEX/Spring94 in
Atlanta, GA, May 23-26, call Tricia at (205)722-0490.

It has existed since i posted the message, actually. The reason why you
haven't heard anything is the annoying lead time of Magazines (about 3 months
after you finally got them interested) It has been demonstrated at Comdex in
Atlanta and at the summer NAMM in Nashville. Brief reviews have appeared in
Multimedia World and some other Multimedia Mags. Both Keyboard and Electronic
Musician should have a review in one of the next issues. (I know this is
happening, but i haven't checked on the exact date lately.) Anyway, if you want
info just call DiAcoustics at the number above. They'll be glad to send out
a package of info.

I think louie.udel.edu /pub/midi is dead now, they closed it down, due to
someone posting some copyrighted stuff...this is a bit of a tragedy for us
patch/sequence traders. Is anybody else concerned enough to maybe write
and ask nicely to re-open the midi archive and allow us legal, honest users
access?
The readme file in the /pub directory gives their reasons for closing and

Band-in-a-Box is a very advanced auto-accompagment program,
and,
a sophisticated algoritmic composing program.
It's primary based on standard genres (different types of Rock, Pop, Dance,
Jazz music etc.), and various methods of jamming with the program to create
new songs/tunes. The raw material generated/created can then be ported to
another (sequencer) program by way of Standard MIDI files, for further
development.

Hey, RE: Finale
Finale is available for less than $200 at most college bookstores or anywhere
else where educational discounts are available. I've been testing out it's
sequencing capability, and with the new version (3.0 for Windows), it
supports standard Windows sound device drivers (including Sound Blaster and
compatibles, along with WaveBlaster). It takes a little more work to overdub
than some other programs (like Cakewalk), but it still is capable of just
about anything... it just takes forever to learn!

Hi Doug.
I'll let somebody else answer your previous questions; I've got one for
you. You're the only other person I've ever known on the planet Earth to
own an AKAI-AX80. Mine has sat in the corner now for about a decade because
I can't find my original cassette tape which holds the default bank patch
information. Do you know if AKAI still has those tapes in stock anywhere?
Oh, I *can* tell you one thing about the AX80 and Performer. The AX80 only
has a few levels of velocity output. It will *not* produce velocities
between 1-127. It rounds off velocities to preprogrammed "plateaus". I am
not sure how many levels there are, but my guess would be around 25 to 30
different velocity levels (probably more). This will restrict your use of
dynamics when sequencing.
Charlie Stokes (cfstokes@ilstu.edu) is probably reading this post. He can
tell you more about how to test your keyboard for available velocity
levels. He can also tell you how difficult it is to contact and communicate
with a human being at MOTU...
Good luck!

If you are happy with Performer, you should look first to Unisyn for
editor/librarian. However, I doubt you'll find coverage for the Akai... . .
the Kawai shouldn't be a problem.

If you have access to the usenet, subscribe to alt.binaries.sounds.midi -
there are usually two to five songs a day. ftp.uwp.edu has a lot of
music-related stuff, probably including some midi files.

Jeff,
I use Performer on the MAC. I found a program on the net "public
domain" that atleast for the MAC converts .mid files to the specific
files of a whole bunch of sequencers custom files and even changes
the icon associated with the file. I suspect you need something
like that for the IBM clone. I would also be interested to find

If it's legit, I don't see why there would be problems geting upgrades. The
program is copy protected and has a serial number so it's not hard to verify
but you better check with Opcode to be sure. (415) 856-3331 The current version
is 2.5.2 and I used it on a IIcx without problems. It's reasonably stable for a
development environment. You can do things to make it unstable. I did.
Speed depends upon your work. There are two areas of concern. As your patches
get larger, it may take some time to load parts into memory and redraw the
screen. This is primarily a problem when creating patches. I once did a "Select
All" in a twelve-tone set-matrix and waited twenty minutes for the selection.
It took a second to alter the selection and another twenty minutes to deselect.
Max is a fast program but If you employ heavy real-time calculations you could
cause MAX or anything else to gag.

Subject: MIDI driver for Windows
Hi,
I've got a small software problem: I've built a very simple MIDI
interface based on a slightly modified RS232 card. From the PC point
of view, it is just a COM port (configurable as COM1 thru 4 by
changing addresses and interrupt number). So far, I've found that my
card is compatible with the "Optronics Basic Midi Kit" driver of
CakeWalk 4.0 Standard (DOS), but now I'm looking for a Windows driver
for such a device, or at least some informations on how to write it.
Can anyone help me?
Tomek
