This appears to have changed. I just did this, and got an automated reply
that the mail should go to
majordomo@maths.ex.ac.uk
with contents
subscribe csound
I have just tried this method, and it appears to have worked.

Hello all,
In regards to sound design, does anyone know some
algorithms or such for "morphing" one sample to another?
More than just a simple crossfade, that is. Do some of
the sample editing packages do it and sound convincing?
What I've heard on Emu's machine isn't up to snuff, IMHO.
(SORRY!) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Jim

If I were to try to build something that did what the morpheus advertises,
I'd run fast fourier transforms (FFTs) on the samples, and store the
results of several transforms (spectrums of amplitudes at various
frequencies at various times during the sample's playback) instead of the
samples themselves.
Playback would involve inverse FFTs of the stored spectra. Morphing would
be done by weighting and averaging the spectra of the instruments before
running an IFFT on the results.
I don't actually know if it would work, to be honest. I've been trying to
get a decent FFT/IFFT working on my PC for a while now, since I think it
could be used for a number of interesting musical applications.

Hey. Can anyone direct me to a copy of csound that will actually run on
my system. I was getting all sorts of strangeness last year while
trying to work it...like csound telling me that my kr,sr,kamps were off,
even though I knew (as did everyone else) that my code was fine.
some people thought my memory configuration might be wrong. Is this
possible? Has anyone else experienced this? I am running 8 megs
onboard (which ought to be plenty, yes?). Could it be that Stacker
is screwing things up?
Thanks,
Phil

I am running the new Dos (what is it...6.2 already ;) ) and windows.
Is therea csound that will run out of windows? That would be interesting.
In any case, is there a program out there I can use to test my memory
configuration?

There is a shell for windows that makes it easier to run the DOS version.
You can tag an sco and orc and tell it to compile, or edit either one.

Phil - I don't know csound but I'm working with MS-Windows -sigh- at the
office and I think that every DOS-App. runs faster outside windows
(because of more real memory etc).

It has been my experience that even MS-Windoze applications run faster
under OS/2.

I am currently runnning csound in windows from the "msdos prompt", but
I have a feeling it would be faster if I ran it directly in dos. Many
of my output files are about 3 megs, but they take several hours to
compile @486-25mhz.
Can anyone tell me if it will run significantly faster outside of
widows? Its a pain to change my autoexec.bat b/c I run some
software that needs crazy extended memory configs, etc, but I woukd
do it if it will work bettr
thanks

Try editing the dos prompt's .pif file and allocating it more memory -
Csound is a 32 bit application and can take advantage of XMS (and DPMI I
think). Also try giving it a better timeslice/priority/whatever-is-called,
this will be at the expense of anything else running.

I don't know about windows, but I use it under OS/2. Usually I have 2
instances of an editor running (one for .sco, one for .orc), 2 OS/2 command
boxes (one to delete/rename/move files, the other to read the menual :), a
windows based waveform editor and the soundblaster volume control. All of
this going and I can't see any sign of a slowdown.

Subject: csound for Mac?
Hi folks
Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but after having read all the stuff
about csound for MSDross and Fensters, the obvious question is "is there a
Mac version, and if so, where can I get it?"
In fact what other programs like this are out there for the Mac. Obviously
I'd like to know about the ones available via anonymous ftp, but would also
be interested in details about commercial stuff.
On the other hand, perhaps I've just stumbled into FAQ territory. Anyway -
what's the deal, people?

Csound for u*x and Macs can be found on cecelia.media.mit.edu in some
/pub directory i believe (it's not very deep, dont worry ;).
I also seem to remember seeing some Mac sound processing software from
the IRCAM web page (I cant recall the address, though i think it's like
http://www.ircam.fr/).
good luck!

Hey guys, is there anyone out there who has put together interesting
csound instruments? I have finally got it running, but I am not very

just what is possible.

The following is directly from the MAC-README in:
/pub/Csound
at: cecelia.media.mit.edu
---------------------------------------------------------
CSOUND FOR THE MACINTOSH
The following files are relevant to Macintosh users:
Csound.hqx Macintosh Csound application
Csound-881.hqx Macintosh 020/030 881/882 Csound application
Csound.man.hqx Csound manual in Microsoft Word format
Csound.sit.hqx Archive containing all source files
These four files are all encoded into ASCII using the BinHex format.
---------------------------------------------------------
I believe that there is an entire folder of examples sent along in the
application bundle as well...examples from Dashow, Chowning, Boulanger,
etc.
Jason.

Subject: Csound Mailing List
Since there has been a lot of traffic about csound, I thought I'd post a
note about the CSOUND mailing list and how to get on it. From the FAQ:
----------------------------------
3.0 How do I get more info on Csound?
Though information about Csound is pretty scarce, you can always find some
useful tips from a couple of sources.
- First, there is a new mailing-list for Csound created by Martin Dupras
(Universite de Montreal, Quebec) and James Andrews (University of Exeter, UK).
This mailing-list has been created especially for discussion on the use of
Csound, and is open to all Csound whether veterans or beginners.
You may join by sending a message to:
csound-request@maths.ex.ac.uk
the first line of which says 'subscribe name@host'
and then post by sending mail to:
csound@maths.ex.ac.uk
----------------------------------------
Hope this helps.
Jason.
