Hello!
Does anybody know if there exist a DAT with which you can record both music
and data (as a backup-unit) and, if it exists, how much it costs?
Also I've heard of read/writeable CD-ROMs. Is this something worth waiting
for?

Thanks!

I have not come across one of these, but if you are a Mac user, there's
always Digidesign. Their audio hardware comes with a program that lets you
back up data on normal audio DATs. I don't know if this back-up is limited to
Soundesigner files or what, tho'.

As for read/writeable CD-ROMs (a contradiction in terms?), there are two
technologies currently available. WORM (Write Once Read Many, or if you prefer
Write Once Read Mostly) and Magneto-optical. While WORM can read CD-ROM it's
a limited technology. Magneto-optical cannot (to my knowledge) read normal
CD's
I guess, there's also the CD-Recorders, which burn regular CD's. It's sort of
a WORM technology. It is also cost-prohibitive at this time. About $3000 for
the recorder and $30 for a blank CD.

i've heard of recordable CD's as low as $13. I can get a name
if someone wants it.

4mm DAT tape sold as data grade differs from audio DAT tape only in that data
grade DAT is pretested for dropouts that could corrupt files during the
restore process.

While special software is required to backup files to DAT (Retrospect is in
wide use, and GMR markets data DAT drives and software for audioworkstation
backup) The Digidesign dATA program will backup Sounddesigner II audio files
and playlist info for Digidesign harware systems ONLY. The beauty of this
program is that is functions with a standard audio DAT (the PAnasonic SV-3700
is the defacto standard) via AES or S/PDIF ports.

In my past life as a digital audio studio designer for broadcast facilities
off line storage in non DIGIDESIGN systems required a dedicated data DAT
(Python, Sony and others make these @$900 street)

In my current life in audio production for CDROM projects and CD premastering
I have found the Digidesign dATA program to be very reliable even though it
is a real time process to backup and restore to/from audio DAT. The
addvantage of the dedicated data DAT system is a restore/backup time of @
half the running time of the file. (That is 30 minutes to backup a one hour
program)

Wow. It's almost affordable to dupe CD's now. Well, except for the little
problem of paying for the hardware, too. But at that cost it is getting closer
to making demos on CDR viable. Ho hum... No way i could afford the recorder
tho'.

This statement could be misunderstood. Digidesign's dATA program
can also back up SD I and AIFF files.

Thank you Mr Stone for mentioning that Digidesign's DATa program backs up SDI
and AIFF files as well as SDII files.

It also will back up compressed audio files.

DATa will backup playlist, region info and markers from Sound Designer front
ended systems (audiomedia and soundtools) It will NOT back up session files
from ProTOOLs (audio only for Protools).
