Hey There,

Were thinking of buying Finale for the Mac. Since I already do
have a sequencing software for our IBM/PC and do not plan to
part with it. We're considering buying a Score writing software
for our Macs (Believe me, it *has* to be on the mac because the
IBM is *loaded* with stuff! and since *I'll* be using the Score writer
and I *personnaly* prefer Macs to IBM/dos).

So heres a couple of questions we've got:

-Does the latest version of Finale run on a Mac SE with 4
         megs of RAM?

-Can different staves be assigned a different MIDI channels
or do I have to playback one channel(voice) at the time?

I use the finale for arranging things for high school marching bands.
I am a pc user but the finale is devolped for the mac and functions
better in the mac format. Ver 3.0 is out for mac / its only out in 2.2
for pc. I am using two diffrent midi instruments for playback [a alesis
d4 for drum sounds and my KB for the wind sounds.} You can assign each of
64 staves to a diffrent channel and diffrent patch. It has the ability to
quantisize but I like using a diffrent sequencer program for real quality
controll on playback. The files are savable in midi format or a format
for printing. If you have more questions write to Finale-Digest@SHSU.edu
There is a listserv for finale users there.

Hello Mac Finale questioner:

Not sure about the Mac compatibility, but I do know that it is possible to
output to as many MIDI channels as your card and instruments can handle. Each
staff can have two independent layers (even with their own MIDI channels),
and each of those layers is capable of two voices, for a total of 4 possible
channels on each staff, multiplied by the number of staffs your composition
contains.

We use Mark of the Unicorn's Mosaic for scoring (on an SE/30). Comparing
notes with a friend that uses Finale, it sounds like the two programs are
very comparable in power and usefullness, but Mosaic jumps way ahead in
ease-of-use. After all, isn't that why we use Macs?

I would suggest at least giving Mosaic a look.

Good luck!

Does anyone know where on the INet to get support, tricks, & tips for
Finale? Thanks in advance.

I can second the positive words on Mosaic, although I'd be concerned
dealing with any large scores on a lower-level machine. I have an
LC-III with 12 Meg and it's just *barely* enough (managing a score
database is real work for a computer). The sequencer part of the
program is acceptable for "proofreading" but certainly not for performance.
You can easily run multiple MIDI channels with it.

I am pleased to announce the FINALE discussion list. While FINALE (a
powerful and complicated music notation program for Macintosh and Windows
platforms) will be our chief discussion, other CODA products as well as
other notation programs are suitable topics. An ftp site for files and
other such tidbits will be in place eventually. Suggestions and uploads
will be welcome.

To subscribe to the FINALE list, send an e-mail message to
LISTSERV@SHSU.edu consisting of SUBSCRIBE Finale. The following message
will be sent to you.

Further administrative requests regarding this list should be sent to:

This is from Henry Howey, who organizes the list.
Good luck,
