It's really not a matter of "allowing" as it is "default." When you select
"Reply" in most mail programs, they will automatically fill in the
destination with the sender's e-mail address, which in this case is the
listserv, not author of the post.

So if you want your reply to go ONLY to the author of the post, you must
deliberately erase the listserv address in the "To:" space and type (or
copy) the author's address, which is usually contained somewhere within the
message.

It's nothing sinister, really.

As far as I know: the driver's due in spring '96. For the moment being a new
DLL solves the worst problems with W95.It's available via Compuserve (GO

where in Europe I can upload the Opcode's OMS?. We (in this university)

When was v2.0 released? I recall that there were a couple of developers
at ICMC in September who were frustrated because they'd written OMS 2.0
compatible software but it wasn't being released. Word was that it was
because they were waiting for the PC version to be finished so they could
ship simultaneously.

If you see the Opcode's Web page you have on the page footer a button
called OMS which drives you to different versions of OMS, one of that is
2.0.2. I don't know when the Opcode people -or another developers- had
written OMS 2.0.2 version, but indeed it exist.

Cheers.

Download StarMaker

ftp://digitool.com/pub/mcl/contrib/STAR-Maker-1.0.1-Demo.sea.hqx

StarMaker is a shareware Symbolic Composer model player for the Mac.
Included is a demo model that composes nice preludes & fugues. It lets
you tweak dozens parameters and produces thousands variations of the
same prelude & fugue idea. We have hundreds of other models that
could help you to become a star.

StarMaker models are programmed in Symbolic Composer. The forthcoming
PowerMac native S-COM version includes option to save the scores in
StarMaker-executable format. Symbolic Composer users can now publish
and distribute their compositions to the 1 million users that are using
Macintosh for music production while keeping the programming details,
or trade-secrets, hidden from the end user.

StarMaker enables also electronic presence to Symbolic Composer users.
With StarMaker it is now possible to participate remote composition
projects in the network by sending a StarMaker panel that the producer
or the other participants can interact with.

This is release 1.0.1 so don't expect too much explanations. Keep also
in mind that a composition model is almost like a synthesizer module
to what comes to complexity and editability. You'd need a manual to
operate it. The demo model does not contain instructions, so you are
given the frustration to learn it by doing.

For those who are familiar with the topics discussed in
fmusic@kssun7.rus.uni-stuttgart.de discussion list, Prelude & Fugue
model demonstrates a musical form which is a fractal by definition. All
themes and dynamics of this model are derived from two themes. As a result
all that you hear are reflections of itself. All compositions are also
self-similar like a fractal since they share the same underlying processes.
It's like a hall of mirrors where each mirror is reflecting the reflections
of all the other mirrors which are reflecting the same.

To join the Symbolic Composer scene and start developing your own
electronic compositions to the audience of 1 million composers and
music makers in this unique media, check our web pages for more
information.

Subject: experiments in granular synthesis

i've been doing odd little bits of experimental synthesis
programming for a while now, generating short sound files and
uploading them to a sampler for playback... it's all i can afford
right now, and i not only sort of enjoy tinkering with the
low-level stuff, i don't even have enough memory on my 286 at
home to run csound... so i'm definitely homebrew.
anyway, after noodling with karplus-strong, vosim, and the like,
i finally decided to tackle granular synthesis... it certainly
sounds like an interesting idea. but does anyone here have any
experience with it? surely there's someone from ccrma or mit
around here.
my immediate question is along these lines:
it strikes me that if the grains of sound in a particular screen
are arranged strictly geometrically with respect to frequency and
time... that is, if they inhabit well-defined 'boxes' in that
space... then for any given time slice you're simply superposing
the output of some number of grains whose amplitude envelopes are
perfectly synched, producing nothing more than an amplitude
modulated set of additive partials. in order for this to be more
than just AM, don't they need to be more time-distributed?
doesn't there need to be under/overlap in their envelope periods,
so that at any moment some are rising, some are falling, and
others are steady? and is that inherent in the original
description of the technique, or did i miss something?

Hello folks,

A friend of mine and I have been setting up a small 4-track/MIDI studio
in his basement. We've got the bare minimum of space to work with. In
trying to determine what should go where, we've encountered the (possible)
problem of magnetic fields. For example, we're not sure how close speakers
can be placed to cassette/DAT tape archives, monitors, etc... That's just
*one* of the points of contention we've had to deal with. I'd go on, but I
think you guys know what I'm talking about.

Rather than go into the "Is it OK to put xxx near xxx? Or "how close can I
put xxx to xxx?" Can anyone give me any basic rules as to how close things
that give off a magnetic field can be placed to things that can be affected
by a magnetic field?

BTW, the pieces we've been moving around:

14" Display
Tascam 4-track
DAT machine
a/d/s "bookshelf" (NS-10M sized) speakers

Thanks,

--- Chris

Mike's "Whither Synthesis" article in the February issue of Recording
magazine was well worth reading. The only major glitch I noticed was
the editor's mispelling of Metlay in the editorial introduction (he
wrote "Metley"). I took slight issue with calling FM a fixed-block
architecture, because each voice or element is highly configurable
(perhaps even too configurable for many). Some of the sweeter voices
in FM are made by using operators as simple sine-wave oscillators and
playing with the envelopes.

Nice job, Mike.
